Sri Lanka Wildlife Safaris: Yala, Udawalawe & National Parks Guide

Few islands of this size can match Sri Lanka wildlife. Within a few hours' drive you can track leopards, watch herds of wild elephants, spot sloth bears and birdlife, and even go whale watching offshore. A Sri Lanka safari is also easy to plan, because the national parks sit close to cultural sites, tea country and the coast. This guide covers the best parks, the animals you can see, when to go and how to turn it all into a trip.

01 · OVERVIEW

Why Choose a Sri Lanka Safari?

  • Big sightings in a compact country. Leopards, elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and hundreds of bird species live across a small island.
  • Short distances. Most parks are a half-day drive from each other, so you can visit more than one in a single trip.
  • Easy to combine. Pair a safari with beaches, culture or hill country.
  • Safaris for every budget. From shared jeeps to private vehicles and luxury camps.

02 · DESTINATIONS

The Best National Parks for a Sri Lanka Safari

Yala National Park

Yala, in the southeast, is the island's most famous park and is known for one of the highest leopard densities in the world. It also has elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and rich birdlife. Read our complete Yala safari guide for tickets, best time and tips.

Udawalawe National Park

Udawalawe is the most reliable place to see wild elephants, thanks to its open grasslands and large reservoir. It is a favourite for families and photographers. See our Udawalawe National Park guide for elephants, fees and safari tips.

Minneriya, Kaudulla and Wilpattu

Minneriya and Kaudulla are known for large elephant gatherings in the dry season, and sit close to the cultural triangle. Wilpattu, the island's largest national park, is a quieter, forested park with natural lakes and leopards.

Horton Plains, Sinharaja and Kumana

For a change of scene, try the cool misty grasslands of Horton Plains, the rainforest of Sinharaja for endemic birds, or Kumana on the east coast for waterbirds.

04 · SEASONS

Best Time for a Sri Lanka Safari

The best time depends on the park. The south parks such as Yala and Udawalawe are generally best in the drier months, when animals gather around water. Minneriya and Kaudulla are best in the dry season for elephant gatherings. Always check park closures, as some parks close for short periods each year.

05 · PLANNING

How to Plan Your Safari Trip

  • Pick your parks. Choose one or two based on the animals you most want to see.
  • Book early. Jeeps, trackers and tickets are best arranged in advance in peak months.
  • Go at dawn. Morning safaris are usually the most active.
  • Allow travel time. Roads can be slower than the distance suggests.
