Udawalawe National Park is the best place in Sri Lanka to see wild elephants up close. Open grassland and a large reservoir make the animals easy to spot, which is why the park is popular with families, photographers and first-time safari travellers. This guide covers what to expect, how fees work and how to plan your visit. It is part of our complete guide to Sri Lanka wildlife safaris.

Why Visit Udawalawe?

  • Reliable elephant sightings in herds, including calves
  • Open landscape that makes wildlife easy to see and photograph
  • Rich birdlife, including eagles, kingfishers and peafowl
  • Easy access from the south coast, Ella and the hill country
  • A good alternative or add-on to Yala

What You Can See

Besides elephants, look for water buffalo, sambar deer, mongoose, crocodiles around the reservoir and many bird species. Leopards live here too but are rarely seen, so go for the elephants.

Udawalawe Entry Fees and Tickets

Fees vary and can change, so confirm the latest charges. A typical Udawalawe safari includes:

  • Park entry per visitor
  • A vehicle fee for the jeep
  • A guide or tracker fee and service charges

If you book through a tour operator, these are usually bundled with your jeep and driver. Check what is included before you book.

Best Time to Visit Udawalawe

Elephants are present year-round, so you can visit in most months. The drier months bring animals to the water and give clearer tracks, while the rainy season makes the park greener with fewer visitors. Early morning safaris are often the most atmospheric.

Elephant Transit Home

Near the park, the Elephant Transit Home cares for orphaned calves with the aim of returning them to the wild. Feeding sessions are held a few times a day and are a popular add-on. Check timings in advance and follow the staff's rules, since the calves are not pets.

Safari Tips for Udawalawe

  • Choose a morning or late afternoon drive for cooler weather and better light.
  • Keep a respectful distance and stay quiet around herds.
  • Do not feed or approach animals.
  • Bring a zoom lens, binoculars, sunscreen and water.
  • Wear neutral colours and light layers.

How Long Do You Need?

One safari is enough for most visitors, and two is better if you love photography. The park is also an easy stop between the hill country and the south coast.

Combine Udawalawe with Other Places

Pair Udawalawe with a leopard-focused drive at Yala, or build a longer route with our Sri Lanka wildlife holidays guide. It also fits naturally after Ella and Nuwara Eliya, as described in our Sri Lanka hill country travel guide.
