Sri Lanka wildlife holidays work best when you visit more than one park. Each park offers something different: leopards at Yala, elephants at Udawalawe, gatherings at Minneriya and quiet forest at Wilpattu. With short distances and good roads, it is easy to build a route that mixes wildlife with culture, tea country and the coast. This guide shares sample itineraries and planning tips. For the overview of parks, read our Sri Lanka wildlife safaris guide.
How to Build a Multi-Park Itinerary
- Choose your priority animal. Leopards point to Yala or Wilpattu, and elephants to Udawalawe or Minneriya.
- Group parks by region. South parks together, and the north-central parks near Sigiriya together.
- Add rest days. Early starts add up, so alternate safaris with relaxed days.
- Finish on the coast. A beach stay is a good way to end a wildlife trip.
Sample 5 to 6 Day Wildlife Holiday
- Day 1: Arrive in Colombo and transfer to the south
- Day 2: Udawalawe elephant safari
- Day 3–4: Yala morning and afternoon safaris
- Day 5: Coastal stay or Galle Fort

Sample 7 Day Wildlife and Culture Holiday
- Days 1–2: Sigiriya, Minneriya or Kaudulla safari for elephants
- Day 3: Kandy and the Temple of the Tooth
- Days 4–5: Nuwara Eliya, tea estates and Horton Plains
- Days 6–7: Udawalawe or Yala, then the south coast

Royal Arabian's Where Nature Comes Alive package follows a similar pattern, combining Sigiriya, Minneriya National Park, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya.
Sample 8 to 10 Day Grand Wildlife Holiday
- Start with Sigiriya and a Minneriya safari
- Continue through Kandy and the hill country
- Visit Ella, then Udawalawe
- Spend two nights at Yala for two safaris
- End with the beach
Royal Arabian's A World in One Island combines two nights at Yala with Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Bentota. Read more about the coast in our Sri Lanka beach holidays guide.
Best Time to Plan a Wildlife Holiday
The dry months are usually best for most parks, but the best months differ by region, so match your dates to the parks you choose. Always allow for park closures and weather.
Tips for Longer Wildlife Trips
- Book hotels near park entrances to reduce early-morning travel.
- Hire a private vehicle and driver for flexibility.
- Pack for both heat and cool evenings if you include the hills.
- Choose responsible operators who follow park rules.
Budgeting Your Trip
Costs depend on season, hotel level and the number of safaris. Read our guide to Sri Lanka safari tour packages for typical inclusions and budgeting advice.
