Few countries let you watch elephants in the morning and swim in the sea by evening. Sri Lanka safari and beach holidays make this possible, because national parks and coastlines sit close together. This guide shows the best park and beach pairings and sample itineraries. For a wider look at the coast, start with our guide to Sri Lanka beach holidays.
Why Combine Safari and Beach?
- Short distances between parks and beaches
- A balance of adventure and relaxation
- Different seasons on different coasts, so you can plan around the weather
- Leopards, elephants, birdlife and marine life in a single trip

Best Safari Parks to Pair with Beaches
- Yala National Park: Known for leopards and a good base for south coast stays.
- Udawalawe National Park: Reliable elephant sightings, close to the south.
- Wilpattu National Park: A quieter, forested park in the northwest.
- Minneriya and Kaudulla: Elephant gatherings in the dry season, usually combined with the cultural triangle and the east coast.
- Kumana National Park: Birdlife near Arugam Bay.

Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, so allow at least two safaris if seeing a specific animal matters to you.
Sample Itineraries

- Two nights near Yala with a morning safari
- Three nights on a south coast beach such as Tangalle or Mirissa
- A day exploring Galle Fort before departure

Best Time for a Safari and Beach Holiday
For the south coast and Yala, plan between December and April. For the east coast with Kumana or the Minneriya region, aim for May to September. Always check conditions, as some parks close for maintenance periods.
Tips for Combining Safaris and Beaches
- Put safaris first and beach days last so you finish relaxed.
- Book early-morning safaris for the best wildlife activity.
- Choose an ethical operator that keeps a respectful distance from animals.
- Pack neutral clothing, binoculars and sun protection.
