East coast Sri Lanka holidays are ideal if you want calm, clear water and fewer crowds. While the south coast gets the most attention, the east offers warm shallow bays, great snorkelling and one of Asia's best-known surf breaks. It is a strong alternative to the options in our main guide to Sri Lanka beach holidays.

Best Time to Visit the East Coast

The east coast is at its best from May to September, when the southwest coast is wet. That makes it the perfect summer-season counterpart to the south and west.

Trincomalee: Natural Harbour and Beaches

Trincomalee has one of the world's finest natural harbours and a mix of history and sea. Highlights:

  • Nilaveli and Uppuveli beaches: Soft sand and calm, clear water.
  • Pigeon Island National Park: Snorkelling over coral with reef fish and sometimes reef sharks.
  • Koneswaram Temple: A cliff-top Hindu temple with sea views.
  • Kanniya Hot Wells: Natural springs with a historical story.
  • Whale and dolphin watching: Seasonal trips are available from the area.

Arugam Bay: Surf and Beach Life

Arugam Bay is a laid-back surf village with a reputation for reliable waves in season. Beginners can find gentler breaks nearby, and non-surfers can enjoy yoga, cafes, lagoons and wildlife. Nearby Kumana National Park is known for birdlife.

These bays are known for their shallow, calm water, which suits families and relaxed swimming. Resorts here lean towards comfort and low-key beach days.

Things to Do Along the East Coast

  • Snorkelling and diving trips
  • Surf lessons at Arugam Bay
  • Lagoon boat rides and birdwatching
  • Cultural visits in Trincomalee and Batticaloa

Getting There

Trincomalee is a long road trip from Colombo and often combined with cultural sites such as Sigiriya and Dambulla. Arugam Bay is reached by road from the south or from the hill country. Plan transfers carefully and allow extra time.

Combine East with Hill Country or Safari

The east coast works well after a wildlife stay at Kumana or Yala, which you can plan using our safari and beach holiday guide. If you are travelling in winter instead, compare it with Bentota and Galle, or see our full region-by-region beach comparison.
