A Galle holiday brings together a UNESCO-listed fort, palm-lined beaches and some of Sri Lanka's best coastal towns. If you are looking at holidays to Galle, Sri Lanka, this guide covers what to see, which beaches to visit and when to go. For the bigger picture, see our main guide to Sri Lanka beach holidays.

Exploring Galle Fort

Galle Fort was first built by the Portuguese and greatly expanded by the Dutch in the 17th century, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inside the walls you can:

  • Walk the ramparts at sunset
  • Browse boutiques, cafes and galleries
  • Visit the lighthouse, churches and the museum
  • Stay in a restored heritage villa or boutique hotel

Best Beaches on the South Coast

  • Unawatuna: A sheltered bay with calm water, good for swimming and relaxed days.
  • Mirissa: Famous for whale-watching trips, a lively beach scene and sunsets.
  • Weligama: Gentle waves that suit beginner surfers.
  • Hikkaduwa: Reefs for snorkelling, plus a long-standing surf and backpacker scene.
  • Tangalle: Quieter, wider beaches and luxury villas further east.

Best Time for a Galle Holiday

The best weather is from November to April. Whale watching from Mirissa is generally best in the drier months, roughly late in the year through early spring, but sightings are never guaranteed. Always choose responsible operators.

Things to Do Around Galle

  • Day trip to Koggala and Madol Duwa for lake and cinnamon-island experiences
  • Visit Dondra Head Lighthouse near Matara
  • Try a cooking class or a tuk-tuk food tour
  • Spend a day at a south coast beach club

How Many Days Do You Need?
