A Kandy trip is one of the most rewarding stops on a Sri Lankan itinerary. The hill city offers sacred temples, lakeside walks, lush gardens and easy access to tea country. This guide covers the top attractions and practical advice. It is part of our wider Sri Lanka hill country travel guide.

Top Things to Do on a Kandy Trip

Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic

This UNESCO-listed temple houses a relic believed to be a tooth of the Buddha. Visit during the ritual ceremonies for a vivid cultural experience. Dress modestly and remove shoes and hats.

Kandy Lake and the Old City

A walk around the lake is a good way to take in the city, with views over rooftops and temples.

Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya

Just outside the city, these gardens are known for their orchids, palms and giant trees, and are ideal for a peaceful half day.

Cultural Dance Show

Traditional Kandyan dance performances include drumming, fire-walking and colourful costumes.

Tea Estates and Factories

Several estates in the surrounding hills welcome visitors for tours and tastings. For a deeper look, see our guide to tea plantation tours in Sri Lanka.

Day Trips from Kandy

  • Spice and herb gardens in nearby Matale
  • Elephant-related and village experiences (choose ethical operators)
  • Temples such as Gadaladeniya and Lankatilaka

Best Time for a Kandy Trip

Kandy is pleasant for much of the year. The drier months make sightseeing easier, while the city's big Esala Perahera festival, held in July or August depending on the lunar calendar, draws large crowds and needs early booking.

How Long to Stay

Two nights covers the main sights. Add a third night if you want gardens, tea estates and a day trip.

Where to Go Next

Most travellers continue from Kandy to the higher tea country. Our guide to Kandy to Nuwara Eliya covers the road, the train and what to see along the way. Once you reach the highlands, plan your stay with our Nuwara Eliya trip guide.
