Best Time to Visit Vietnam: Weather & Travel Season Guide

BlogVietnam Travel Seasons

Vietnam runs over 1,600 km north to south, which means it doesn't have one single "best season" - the north, centre, and south each follow different weather patterns. Here's how to time your trip depending on which regions are on your Vietnam itinerary.

This page is part of our complete guide to Vietnam tour packages from India.

The Short Answer

For most multi-region itineraries, November to April is the safest window - it avoids the worst of the northern winter chill, the central typhoon season, and the southern monsoon, while covering the dry season in Phu Quoc and Ho Chi Minh City.

North Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa)

  • Oct-Dec: Cool, dry, and generally the most comfortable stretch - good for both Hanoi sightseeing and Halong Bay cruises
  • Jan-Mar: Cold and often overcast in Hanoi; Sapa can get genuinely cold, occasionally with frost or light snow at higher elevations
  • Apr-May: Warming up, still relatively dry - a good shoulder-season window
  • Jun-Sep: Hot and humid with the heaviest rainfall of the year

Best months: October to December, or April

Central Vietnam (Danang, Hoi An)

  • Feb-May: Dry, sunny, and warm - arguably the best window for beach time in Danang
  • Jun-Aug: Hot and humid, but still largely dry - busy with international tourists
  • Sep-Nov: Typhoon season; heavy rain and rough seas are common, especially in October
  • Dec-Jan: Cooler and often rainy

Best months: February to May

South Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc)

  • Nov-Apr: Dry season - consistently sunny with low humidity, the ideal window for Phu Quoc's beaches
  • May-Oct: Wet season, though rain typically arrives as short, heavy afternoon showers rather than all-day downpours

Best months: November to April

Timing Your Itinerary Around the Weather

Phu Quoc-only trip: aim for November to April for the best beach weather. See our full Phu Quoc Island guide for more.

  • Hanoi + Halong Bay: October to December or April offer the most reliable conditions for a cruise.
  • Danang + Hoi An: February to May is the sweet spot; avoid September to November if possible due to typhoon risk.
  • North-to-south itineraries (like Vietnam Explorer or Vietnam Odyssey): November to April balances conditions across all regions reasonably well, since it avoids the north's coldest months and the centre's typhoon season simultaneously.

A Note on Tet (Vietnamese New Year)

Tet usually falls in late January or February and is Vietnam's biggest holiday. Many local businesses close for several days around it, and domestic travel and hotel rates spike. It's worth checking the exact dates for your travel year before booking, and factoring this into your cost planning - see our Vietnam tour package cost from India guide.
