6-Day vs 8-Day Sri Lanka Itinerary: Which One Fits Your Trip?

BlogSri Lanka Itinerary Planning

One of the first questions every traveler faces when planning a Sri Lanka itinerary is simple: how many days do you actually need? To make this concrete, this guide compares two real, bookable itineraries from Royal Arabian, a DMC that runs private, chauffeur-driven Sri Lanka tours — a 6-day route built around adventure and wildlife, and an 8-day route that adds Galle Fort and beach time. All prices below are the operator's published "starting from" rate, per person on twin sharing.

6-Day Itinerary: "Journey Through the Heart of Sri Lanka"

This package covers Kandy, Kitulgala, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Yala, and Colombo, and leans into adventure alongside the usual cultural stops. Based on the route order and highlights published on the package page, the trip flows roughly like this:

Kandy: Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, a herbal and spice garden stop, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, and a Kandy city tour.

Kitulgala: A stop for white water rafting and other river-based adventure activities on the way to the hill country.

Nuwara Eliya: A city tour plus visits to tea plantations and the surrounding scenic hill country.

Ella: The Nine Arches Bridge, a hike up Little Adam's Peak, and the Flying Ravana zipline for those wanting an adrenaline stop.

Yala: A jeep safari through Yala National Park in search of leopards, elephants, and other wildlife.

Colombo: A closing city tour covering Galle Face Green, the Red Mosque (Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque), the Lotus Tower, and time for shopping before departure.

Best time to travel: The operator lists November–April as the best window for this route. See Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka for more detail on seasonal timing.

Starting price: $313 per person (twin sharing), roughly ₹29,800, including hotels, breakfast, transfers, and an English-speaking chauffeur. Yala safari jeep fees, Kitulgala rafting, and the Ella zipline may be additional — confirm inclusions before booking.

8-Day Itinerary: "A World in One Island"

This package covers Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Yala, Mirissa, Galle, Bentota, and Colombo — the same cultural and wildlife stops as the 6-day route, but extended with two extra nights so beach destinations can be added instead of adventure activities. Based on the package page, the route covers:

Kandy: Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, a cultural dance show at Kandy Lake Club, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, and an en-route visit to the Sri Bhakta Hanuman Temple.

Nuwara Eliya: A tea plantation and factory tour, Gregory Lake, and a stop at a strawberry farm — this leg gets two nights instead of one.

Yala: A jeep safari in Yala National Park, also extended to two nights for a better chance at wildlife sightings, plus nearby stops like the Nine Arches Bridge area, Ravana Pool, Ella Swing, and Ravana waterfalls.

Mirissa: A stop along the south coast en route to Galle (whale watching, seasonal, is a popular optional add-on here).

Galle: Galle Dutch Fort and a Koggala River boat safari.

Bentota: Beach time, plus a visit to the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery.

Colombo: A closing tour covering the Red Mosque, Independence Square, and the Lotus Tower.

Best time to travel: The operator lists both December–April and May–September as good windows, since the itinerary spans both the west/hill-country region and areas less affected by the opposite monsoon. See Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka for the full seasonal breakdown.

Starting price: $448 per person (twin sharing), roughly ₹42,600, including hotels, breakfast, transfers, and an English-speaking chauffeur. Safari jeep fees and optional activities like whale watching in Mirissa are typically additional.

Which One Should You Choose?

Pick the 6-day itinerary if:

  • You have limited leave or a fixed short window
  • Budget is the top priority ($313 vs. $448 starting price)
  • You want adventure activities (white water rafting, ziplining) alongside culture and wildlife
  • Beach time isn't a priority for this trip

Pick the 8-day itinerary if:

  • You want beach time in addition to culture and wildlife
  • You'd rather have two nights at Yala for a better safari chance than a single rushed visit
  • You're traveling as a couple or family on a milestone trip and prefer a slower pace
  • You have flexibility on both budget and travel dates

Mixing and Matching

Both itineraries above are real, structured routes, but most operators — including Royal Arabian — will customize nights per destination based on your interests. Common adjustments include:

Swapping the adventure stops (rafting, zipline) for extra beach nights if you're less interested in adrenaline activities

Adding a Ramayana Trail detour — Sita Amman Temple and Ashok Vatika sit right along the Nuwara Eliya leg of either route — see the Sri Lanka Ramayana Trail guide

Extending the Yala safari to two nights (as the 8-day route already does) if wildlife is your priority
